"Opportunities are always there... We have to be receptive"

While reading the article posted by Saumil, it showcases the interplay of our own set of values against that of the multi generational mindset of job seekers (at least of the ones I met) and the values espoused by our organization. Allow me to share a piece of my experience

myLife Principle:
My work is first and foremost my calling. It is something that I enjoy doing, whether I am paid or not.

I took an Engineering course then not knowing what I am getting into. But in the process, thru the extra curricular activities I got involved in, and my experience with God, I discovered myCalling and what I really want to do-- be involve in the building of people's lives. In college, thru the OSA, I was tasked to represent my org and school in various training programs in different places. I then began to got involve in various activities and HR interventions that would spur leadership, hope, encouragement and motivation. I do it for free, since just the thought of it, I find delight and excitement. Eventually I was given opportunity to start in a church ministry, then as a Training Officer and now as an HR Manager in a dynamic and well known company.

At present, I still do what I enjoy doing, the money I earn is incidental. I have set-up egroups, joined forums and set-up several blogs to do what I am called for--

Multi Generational Mindsets:
To date, there are several generations in the work force. The Baby Boomers, the X Generation, the Y Generation and now the "ragnarok" generation.

Some are compensation motivated:
They will take the job offer if the price is right.(If they are willing to leave their present
work for the right price, what will prevent then from leaving our company in the future?)

Some looked at the stability of the organization:
The entry rate is not the issue, but the long term Job security and career growth.

Some looked at the work schedule:
They do not like to work 6 days a week

Some are just in need of a job:
Any job will do, due to domestic problem, any means to earn is appreciated.

Some looked at the work environment and culture:
"better work with the devil you know than the devil you do not know"

Some looked for tools:
"internet access, cell phones etc."

Some looked for corporate experience:
being employed for the moment is a transition stage.

My Company's Values:

The Chairman of the organization built his empire thru practical wisdom, dedication, integrity and concern for people.

Having set the example, he expects his employees to do the same:

1. Love for people. He had the opportunity to shut down the company during presidency of Tita Cory, but because of the several thousands of both direct and indirect employees that will be displaced, he reconsidered his decision.

2. Integrity. Values commitment to another people and personal honesty as a virtue.

3. Dedication. Having built his organization with his full effort, employees who displayed similar virtue are rewarded several ways. Yearly increase, Service Awards, Promotion.

4. Practical Wisdom. The Chairman, when he started his business, is only third year high school. The folly of war made him start his business on the streets of Azcarraga (CM Recto now). From there, revenue centers started sprouting across the country. To date, his company is rated as one of the best in Asia. Whose investments includes Property Management, Retailing, Banking, Telecommunications and Media.

While the company values education, it equally values people who learned practical wisdom from the school called "life".

"Opportunities are always there... we have to be receptive"

Today, many people plan their careers using trial and error methods that lack proper focus and tangible goals. This situation often leads to a loss in terms of opportunity, that would be vital for one's career. To tackle this, evidyarthi.com gives you a tool that helps you to plan your career more effectively.

It is imperative that we need to plan our career more effectively. Most of the time, career decisions are taken, based on the following parameters:

Financial Reasons:
Choosing a job based upon lucrative monetary benefits. This could be because of financial situation at home or because of the myth that once you have money other things can be bought or higher salary is an index for higher social prestige.

Locational Reasons:
Taking up a job to be at a particular place for emotional reasons, could be because the person does not want to stay away from his family, friends and relatives.

Security Reasons:
Taking up a job for security reasons to avoid risks.

Going Abroad:
Certain jobs and courses facilitate easy trips abroad and rake in a lot of money. This we call it the IT-phenomena

Qualification Trap:
People are also of the belief that the work you do should be based on the degree you have earned. So, if a person is creative and good in designing clothes she would still be teaching in a college or school rather than taking up her hobby as her profession purely because she had earned a degree in teaching.

For all these and several other ones we find many people pursuing their jobs with lot of resentment and in consequence would be under a lot of stress.

The famous scientist Thomas Alva Edison who used to work 18 hours a day once said, "I never worked ..I only played"

The important thing in selecting a job is that you should be able to enjoy what you are doing. If you are able to achieve this, you would be able to cherish the amount of time you spend on your job.

Let us go in a systematic manner in making a right career decision.
