Generosity In The Midst Of Crisis

If the news are to be believed, more than the devastation of the hurricane, it's horrible to note that gangsters managed to loot, rape and even kill people who are victims of a natural disaster. And because of delayed relief operations, people are shooting each other for food and water. And this is happening supposedly in a first world country.

In all of these, I am glad for two things-- Wait, its not because America or Bush deserve it and/or the disaster did not happen here. As a nation, we have our own share of natural and man made disasters.

I am happy because our Gov't., in-spite of the nation's crisis, chose to assist another nation in need, the news here. It speaks of our dignity as a nation, it shows that we are not always a recipient of aid. Being a responsible member of the global community, in-spite of our nation's own needs, we chose to extend assistance.

More than the dignity of our Nation, I am proud of the gesture by our Gov't. not because I am a GMA fan, but because it sets the foundation for the Philippines to eventually prosper. Let me explain why with the principle I will quote below:

"A generous man will prosper; he who refreshes others will himself be refreshed.
- Proverbs 11:25 (NIV)

Unless Filipinos broke out of the poverty mentality, where we expect to receive and depend on the good deeds of others, we will stay poor. But the moment a change of mindset took place and we start giving in-spite of our limited resources, not for a show but to genuinely help people in need. Then the principle I quoted above is already at work.

This will bring me to the second reason why I am excited. Our local church opened an opportunity to give for those in need. Being part of one of the largest Christian church in Manila, and respected around the world, its a privilege and honor to partake of the relief operations.

Hey guys, before our present woes in this nation is solved, it may get worse. With the expected implementation of eVAT and the effect of Katrina's devastation to oil prices, life may not be a walk in the park. One way to prepare for the crisis(es) our nation may face is to be generous and generous for the right reasons. What Katrina did is provide the right reasons to give. Generosity is not measured by the amount we give, but by the condition of our heart when we give.
