Reinventing The Wheel
Everything has been will come back again. Everything that has ever done will be done again. Nothing is new on earth. There isn’t anything about which someone can say, ‘Look there is something new'. It was already here long ago. It was here before we were. Ecclesiastes 1:9-10 (NIrV)
Have you ever noticed? Successful products are not new inventions, rather an “innovation” or “improvement” of what already exists. From Betamax to VHS, from VHS it evolved to Laser Disc's, Laser Disc's to VCD's and from VCD its now DVD's. What would be next?
Successful entrepreneurs as well as professionals recognized that “nothing is new in this life”- whether in business, economy, politics, etc. all things have happened before and will happen again. These achievers acknowledged the present situation and analyzed the traditional solution. They enhanced the old solution and offered a product that will address the inefficiencies of the old one.
Successful people are open to new trends brought by time and the ever changing needs of the market. These people continued to research and innovate to launch a better product that would create a new need and/or address the present needs.
As what Thomas Edison once said “There’s a way to do it better - find it”
As I mentioned in my last post, we have relaunched our newly renovated cinemas. This is to compete with the new generation of theater houses. We also introduced new innovations-- offering our auditorium for multi purpose use, not limiting productivity to film exhibition, gala shows and advance screenings. So far, we have been successful in using our facilities for live satellite feed of major sports event like the Manny Paquiao fight, concerts, stage plays, school events, forums and church services. Furthermore, we introduced the SMS/ Cell Phone based purchase of tickets, no need to que to purchase tickets, far better than online transactions. These are classic illustrations of reinventing the wheel.
Likewise, in our employment and life in general, we will always face an unpleasant situation. But this experience is not exclusive to us, someone, somewhere at one time has been in a similar situation. It is to our advantage if we can connect with these people and learn from them.
Ralph Waldo Emerson said “learn from the mistakes of others, you’ll never live long enough to make them all yourself”.
We can avoid their mistakes but build upon the good lessons they provided. Take the cue from this ancient proverb ”Everything has been will come back again. Everything that has ever done will be done again. Nothing is new on earth.”
